Students  and  cast  members  are  abuzz  with  excitement  for  the  upcoming  Suncoast  musical,  “Beauty  and  the  Beast.”  Thankfully,  the  production  is  off  to  a  great  start  after  the  previous  play,  “Almost  Maine”,  that  premiered  in  Winter  of  2021.  Auditions,  callbacks,  and  rehearsals  are  all  smooth  sailing  so  far;  a  sure  foretelling  of  the  final  show’s  success.

The  classic  musical  opened  on  Broadway  in  1994  and  since  then  has  been  performed  hundreds  of  times  in  theaters  around  the  country.  Now  at  Suncoast,  the  prospect  of  staging  one  of  Disney’s  most  beloved  musicals  is  exciting  for  the  cast  and  crew.  

Jillian  Mersky,  a  senior  in  the  lead  role  of  Belle,  said,  “You  really  don’t  realize  how  much  you  miss  your  extracurriculars  and  how  they  benefit  your  mental  health  until  you’re  back  in  them  and  realize  what  you  were  missing.  So  it’s  been  very  fun  and  I  missed  it  a  lot.”  Although  “Beauty  and  the  Beast”  is  only  a  couple  weeks  into  rehearsals,  Mersky  is  already  excited  for  all  that’s  happening  with  the  process.  Not  only  is  this  Suncoast’s  first  musical  since  2019,  it  is  also  the  first  musical  with  the  new  theater  director,  Arthur  Mendini.  He  shares  everyone’s  excitement  about  the  preparation  for  the  show  and  upcoming  performance.  

He  stated,  “my  expectations  are  great.  With  everything  that  I  produce,  I  try  to  do  the  most  and  make  it  a  unique  experience  for  everyone  involved,  those  being  onstage,  backstage,  and  in  the  audience.”  “Beauty  and  the  Beast’’ is certainly  a  recognizable  title  and  Mendini  hopes  that  the  show’s  reputation  will  bring  support  from  administration  and  ticket  sales  from  fans.  It  is  an  extravagant  production,  but  the  talented  crew  is  excited  and  determined  to  pull  it  off  for  the  final  showing  in  April.

Cast  members  returning  to  the  stage  from  the  long  break  are  excited  to  step  back  into  the  thrill  of  theater.  Juniors  and  seniors  are  the  only  ones  who  have  experience  with  theater  at  Suncoast,  so  they  are  especially  glad  to  return.  

Mersky  excitedly  stated,  “It  has  been  some  of  the  happiest  I’ve  been  in,  well,  two  and  a  half  years.  You  really  don’t  realize  how  much  you  miss  your  extracurriculars  and  how  they  benefit  your  mental  health  until  you’re  back  in  them  and  realize  what  you  were  missing.  So  it’s  been  very  fun  and  I  missed  it  a  lot.”  This  production  offers  a  lot  of  roles,  allowing  many  students  to  be  able  to  participate  in  a  central  part  of  the  show,  so  it  is  a  great  musical  experience  for  everyone  coming  back.  Mendini  and  the  rest  of  the  cast  are  excited  for  the  showing  because  of  all  the  talent  on  stage.  

Stage  manager  Lily  Docekal  commented,  “I  think  it’s  going  to  work  itself  out.  It’s  going  to  be  good  because  the  cast  is  really  talented.”  Docekal  has  been  a  part  of  theater  since  freshman  year  and  is  committed  to  doing  her  part  to  make  the  show  the  best  it  can  be.

An  asset  to  the  theater  program  is  the  number  of  students  in  theater  that  also  are  a  part  of  chorus,  providing  a  strong  vocal  background  for  the  show’s  iconic  songs  like  “Be  Our  Guest”  and  “Belle”.  While  this  does  help  the  sound  of  the  theater,  rehearsals  with  chorus  also  occasionally  clash  with  theater  practice,  and  many  of  the  theater  kids  also  participating  in  chorus  miss  out  on  extra  practice.  Fortunately,  Mendini  is  working  with  Hannah  Harris,  the  choral  director  at  Suncoast  who  helps  out  with  the  theater  production;  making  the  two  extracurriculars  work  together.  

Mersky  explained,  “We  all  rely  on  her  for  individual  work.  She  really  is  a  lot  of  the  cast’s  private  vocal  coach.”  The  leads  frequently  practice  in  the  chorus  room  for  solo  practice  while  the  ensemble  rehearses  choreography  in  the  auditorium.  With  Music  Performance  Assessments  just  ending,  chorus  and  theater  will  be  even  more  tightly  knit.

With  all  of  the  good  progress  so  far,  the  final  production  is  sure  to  be  a  smashing  success.  Cast  members,  backstage  crew  and  managers  alike  are  enthusiastic  about  the  performance  and  are  looking  forward  to  an  opening  night  they  will  not  soon  forget.
