2021 Monthly Songs Review
As we enter the new year let’s review the songs 2021 gave us.

January –
Driver’s License – Olivia Rodrigo
Olivia’s Rodrigo’s pop ballad debuted at No. 1 on both the U.S. based Billboard Hot 100 chart and the Billboard Global 200 on January 19. This song is about a heartbroken teenager watching her ex move on. Similar to Taylor Swift‘s “You Belong With Me,” this song has a strong emotional appeal.
February –
Up – Cardi B
This song became a viral TikTok sound to dance to as people all around the world created videos to the catchy hook: “If it’s up, then it’s up, then it’s up, then it’s stuck.” The hook was based off of the phrase ”it’s up and it’s stuck” which is mainly used in the south.
March –
Peaches -Justin Bieber Featt. GIVEŌN and Daniel Caesar
The most talked about track on Justin Bieber’s album “Justice” would be “Peaches”, which includes R&B artists GIVEŌN and Daniel Caesar. The catchy melody and chorus make “Peaches” a stand out track as it is played all over the world.
Leave the Door Open- Silk Sonic
“Leave the Door Open” by Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak is a calm feel good song that has both males trying to lure a love interest into coming over.
April –
T r a n s p a r e n t s o u l – Willow Feat. Travis Barker
“Transparent Soul” is an example of an artist expanding their talents. This song includes punk-rock influences with Willow on the guitar, Blink-182’s Travis Barker on the drums and the edgy lyrics.
Kiss me More – Doja Cat Feat. SZA
In this song Doja Cat and SZA basically state what they want from their lover. “Kiss Me More” debuted at number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100.
May –
Butter – BTS
After dominating 2020 with their record breaking single “Dynamite,” BTS released another track in English called “Butter,” This song referenced two of the biggest icons in music, which are Usher and Micheal Jackson. As stated in the song, the boys are “smooth like butter” as they make people fall in love with them and make them want to dance.
Miss The Rage – Trippie Redd Feat. Playboi Carti
This track took over social media platforms such as TikTok just from a snippet of the beat. This then led the song becoming one of the most anticipated rap songs of the year.
June –
Woman – Doja Cat
Doja discussed the different roles women and herself face within society. She praised the way women are able to move in and out of each role with ease.
Late at night – Roddy Ricch
In this Track Roddy Rich professed his love for a woman and promised to satisfy all her needs. Ricch brags about buying his girl expensive things as an example of satisfying her needs in the first verse.
July –
Wild Side – Normani Feat. Cardi B
Being heavily motivated by music from the past, a sample of Aaliyah’s “One in a Million” was heavily influenced by this song. “Wild Side” uses dance moves from Janet Jackson and visuals from TLC and Missy Elliot.
Industry Baby – Lil Nas X Feat. Jack Harlow
“Industry Baby ” showed Lil Nas X clapping back at his haters and proving his power to stay in the music industry as a black male in the LGBT community. This song begins with a harmony of trumpets.
August –
Family Ties – Baby Keem Feat. Kendrick Lamar
This track is split into two parts with the rappers dividing the track up with different styles. It begins with Baby Keem rapping with a clean flow and then the beat switches completely when it’s Kendrick’s verse becoming darker and there is no sense of rhyme and flow, which makes his part unique.
September –
Have Mercy – Chlöe
“Have Mercy” is the lead single for her upcoming solo album. This song is in reply to the people who had something to say about her body and how she chose to show it. This song allows her to express herself freely without caring about what anybody thinks.
Fue Mejor – Kali Uchis Feat. SZA
This track talks about the pain and betrayal from what a bad relationship can leave behind. This song also talks about the lasting impact heartbreak can have on one person and how painful it is to try to be alright.
October –
Easy on me – Adele
“Easy On Me” is a song that shows the inside of the emotional headspace of the singer and mother as she tells the story of what happened to her over the last few years.
November –
No love – Summer Walker Feat. SZA
From Summer Walker’s long awaited second album “Still Over It,” “No Love” is a feature with SZA and it is basically calling out Walker’s ex complaining that he didn’t treat her right during their relationship.
December-
I Hate U – SZA
This song was originally part of a couple of singles that were released on her Soundcloud earlier in the year. Without getting an official release on streaming platforms her fan blew up a snippet of the song on TikTok making it become a viral sound and trend. On this track SZA sings of confused feelings a past lover left her with.
